Dear Greek Prime Minister, Please DON'T Close the Greek Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand!

With this announcement via Facebook on 31 July 2015, the Greek Embassy in Wellington advised the public of the imminent closure of the post.

A few days later, yesterday, 11 August 2015, again via Facebook, the Greek Embassy advised that all consular services would cease on Friday 21st August, 2015, just 10 days notice for people to get their paperwork in order and we all know what getting Greek documentation in order means...

The issue of economic cutbacks because of the Greek economic crisis has been on the horizon for a few years now. The Greek Associations of New Zealand had made proposals to the Greek government in 2012 that could well have put off such an unnecessary step backwards in terms of bilateral relations but have been ignored, and New Zealand's citizens of Greek descent are understandably upset at the lack of response to their proposals.

On August 3, the Greek Community of Wellington and Suburbs, the largest Greek community organisation in New Zealand, sent a new letter, co-signed by the other Greek community organisations, requesting that the Greek government reconsiders its decision.

We support that request and urge the Greek government to keep the communication going. This is not the kind of news we like to see especially when we worked so hard to ensure equivalent diplomatic representation in both Greece and New Zealand.

The Hellenic New Zealand Association in Greece was set up as a result of the closure of the NZ Embassy in Greece 24 years ago. Shortly after the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete, in 1991, the New Zealand Government decided to close the New Zealand Embassy in Athens, ignoring the bonds of friendship that have bonded the two sides and were forged on the battlefields of World War II. The New Zealanders living in Greece decided we needed to let the NZ government know that we were not at all happy with what we considered a not well-thought out decision and not convinced by the reasons given for this closure. We believed that it was very important to make an official protest by way of a petition protesting the shortsightedness of this move by the New Zealand Government and for the next few months travelled around Greece collecting signatures to support it. We presented it to the New Zealand government and in April of 1992 I addressed a Special Parliamentary Committee in support of our petition. The Embassy has not reopened, but 18 months after it closed the Athens Embassy, New Zealand opened an Embassy in Turkey sending the wrong kind of messages to us all. The rest is history but we do not forget.

When NZ closed the Athens Embassy we considered it a major step backwards in bilateral relations and have worked consistently to ensure the issue remains on the front burner. With Greece closing Wellington, diplomatically things get worse, especially with an increasing number of Greek citizens either returning to or taking up residence in New Zealand for the first time and an increase in imports from Greece.

We urge the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Kotzias, and the Prime Minister, Mr Alexis Tsipras, to reconsider their decision and, at the very least, retain a consular level appointment that will respect and reflect the strong relations between our two countries.

1915 - 2015 Honouring Our Heroes 100 Years on: ANZAC Day in Athens, Greece

This year marks the centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign by the ANZACs

The ANZAC tradition – the ideals of courage, endurance and comradeship that are still relevant today – was established on 25 April 1915 when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, using Lemnos island as a support base.

It was the start of a gruelling campaign that lasted eight months and would result in thousands of Australian and New Zealand casualties and deaths.  Their memory and sacrifices are honoured at ceremonies around the world each year on 25 April.

Lest we forget....

They shall grow not old....as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,

We will remember them,We will remember them...

1914: World War I begins...

Places... where NZ soldiers fought and fell...

Medals...for heroism in faraway places

Lest we forget....

Let's remember too that this year also commemorates 100 years from the first 'modern' genocide, that of the 1.5 million Armenian, 700 thousand Greek and 500 thousand Assyrian Christians who were slaughtered or expelled from the Pontos in the first systematic ethnic cleansing of the 20th century by the Turkish army as they sought to 'purify' their land of peoples who had lived there for centuries.

Massacres, forced deportations, death marches, summary expulsions, arbitrary executions and the destruction of Christian Orthodox cultural, historical and religious monuments were just a few of the 'weapons' chosen by the Young Turks to bring about this genocide... a genocide which has been recognised by the International Association of Genocide Scholars in 2007, and by Greece, Cyprus, Holland, Sweden, Armenia, France and Germany, the EU Parliament and Pope Frances recently but which Turkey still refuses to acknowledge...
